Obituary
July 21, 1946 — September 10, 2026
Andre Marcel Frere passed away peacefully on September 10, 2026, lovingly surrounded by his family, following a long and very unexpected hospital stay. He was 80 years young.
Andre was born in San Francisco on July 21, 1946, to Gladys and Ernest Frere, a couple who had made their way to America from Europe — his mother born in Switzerland, his father in France. After graduating from Redwood High School and attending the College of Marin, Andre moved to Santa Rosa, where he met and married Gloria Jean Otte — his soulmate and the love of his life. They were married for 58 years.
Their love was built on mutual respect, gratitude, understanding, and a genuine partnership that lasted a lifetime. They shared a life filled with warmth, adventure, and a deep appreciation for one another. Andre loved Gloria with all his heart, and at just twenty-one years old, he knew she was the woman he wanted to spend his life with and asked her to be his wife.
They were an unstoppable pair, choosing each other through every joy and challenge life brought their way. Gloria came from a lively Italian family that took to Andre immediately, welcoming him as one of their own. He quickly became a beloved part of the family, and over the decades, they shared countless wonderful memories, from Sunday dinners at her grandparents’ home to holidays and gatherings filled with laughter, good food, and the warmth of being surrounded by those they loved.
Four years after they married, Andre became a father to twin boys, Justin and Vincent. He knew in that moment that his life would never be the same, and he embraced fatherhood with strong conviction, love, and responsibility. Five years later, he and Gloria welcomed their third son, Brandon.
As a family of five, Andre provided a reliable and supportive home, devoted always to his wife and his three boys. He worked hard all week and made certain the weekends belonged to his family — one adventure after the next. He introduced his sons to many different activities, including snow skiing, water skiing, fishing, camping, hunting, scuba diving, freediving for abalone, and even flying. Andre was a certified scuba diver and a private pilot who owned an airplane in his early twenties. The joy he took in these pursuits became his sons' inheritance: they learned from his hobbies, his energy, and his endless appetite for the abundance that life has to offer.
A master with his hands, Andre took pride in his work, whether in the kitchen, at the workbench, holding a fishing pole, or under a car hood. He frequently flexed his culinary skills, never failing to impress. He had an uncanny knack for extending the life of many a gadget and could catch just about any fish he set his mind to. There was no engine he couldn't bring back to life, no mechanical challenge he could not overcome.
Once, while aboard his dear friend Jim's boat far off the coast of Baja, Mexico, the engine failed, leaving them stranded at sea. Thankfully, Andre, ever willing to help, was there to resurrect the engine and return his friends home safely. That was Andre — always willing to help. Wherever he was and whenever he was needed, his answer never changed: "I can do it."
Andre’s strong work ethic and remarkable skill with his hands left a lasting impression on each of his sons, teaching them not only the value of a hard day’s work, but also the importance of ingenuity, resourcefulness, and working smarter, not harder.
There was no engine he couldn’t bring back to life, no mechanical challenge he could not overcome.
Later in life, Andre and his father-in-law, Omer Otte, built a home together in west Sonoma County. These were some of Andre’s happiest days. Andre lived there for nearly four decades, cultivating the land with his own hands. He was an avid gardener who designed and landscaped the grounds himself, right down to the koi pond. Andre made his home a sanctuary, a place where he was most at peace, and a place to reunite with his adult children and close friends over the years.
From childhood to the end of his life, Andre loved the outdoors, especially with a fishing pole in his hand or a boat ready to take family and friends out for a day of skiing and cruising. He loved the wonders of this world and the people in it. Andre found his greatest satisfaction in life's simple pursuits.
Andre was a sweet, gentle, and friendly man who never met a stranger. He had a natural ability to connect with people from every walk of life, equally at ease in the company of billionaires and everyday people. Wealth and status meant little to him; he treated everyone with the same genuine warmth and respect. He had a heart of gold and was generous in every sense of the word, especially with his love and kindness. Andre took a sincere interest in others, always wanting to know their stories and understand who they truly were. And he had no shortage of stories himself, having lived a remarkably full and interesting life. A wonderful cook, a caring father, and a devoted husband, Andre will be remembered by so many for his easygoing nature, the twinkle in his eye, and his simple, sincere way of speaking that made everyone feel immediately at ease.
Andre took a sincere interest in others, always wanting to know their stories and understand who they truly were.
In the later years of his life, Andre carried a deep and abiding gratitude for the gifts he had been given throughout his life — above all, his wife and his family. He would often grow emotional speaking of how much he loved them and how lucky he was to have their love. Some of the last words he spoke, while embracing his family in the hospital and holding their arms close, were simply: "I love you guys."
Andre’s gratitude for Gloria was immeasurable. Their connection was so deep and natural that it was as though they had known and loved each other for lifetimes before this one.
Andre lived life fully, and he lived it outdoors. His travels carried him through Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada, Central America, and across the United States. And although he liked to travel, his favorite place to be was always home.
Andre is survived by Gloria, his beloved wife of 58 years; his sons Vincent Frere (Deanne), Justin Frere (Jennifer), and Brandon Frere (Vanessa); and his five grandchildren: Adrian Frere, Anthony Frere, Lilly Frere, Parker Frere, and Grayson Frere.
Andre will be deeply missed, and his passing leaves a void in the hearts and lives of his family that can never be filled. He was one of the toughest and strongest men you could ever know, yet beneath that strength was a heart of gold, filled with love, compassion, kindness, and resilience. He was the best friend anyone could ask for — loyal, steadfast, and true. He stepped in and stood up when no one else would. He was honest, trustworthy, and full of life. He was the best of all men, and the best of us all.
Until we meet again, my dear sweet Andre.
